The storm closed the mountain road just after seven, so nobody came up to Blackwood Observatory that night and nobody left. By morning the observatory's director, Dr. Elias Thorne, was dead, found among the glass negatives in the Plate Vault. Four people were shut in with him, and one of them killed him.
Four things are missing from the instrument log: the brass sextant from the meridian bench, a flask of laudanum from the medicine chest, one of the counterweights from the telescope drive, and a spool of copper wire from the workshop.
The night register puts each of the four in a different room, at a different time, with one of the missing items. Work out who was where, with what, and when, and you will have Thorne's killer.
